CIPS Courses - Professional Diploma

CIPS Professional Diploma in Procurement and Supply

Aimed at senior procurement professionals and procurement managers with the objective of building competence, giving managers the ability to formulate strategic direction and advice, in areas such as change management, stakeholder management and team leadership. Also it aims to develop specialised knowledge in areas such as the management of projects, the legal aspects of procurement and diligence within global supply chains. The Professional Diploma is the final step towards the CIPS Graduate Diploma and the award of MCIPS, the leading global qualification in procurement and supply chain management. Candidates need to successfully complete five units, three compulsory units and two optional units. The topics covered on the course are:

Compulsory Units

Leadership in procurement and supply (PD1)

This unit is intended to provide candidates with the ability to appreciate and utilise influencing, and leadership skills and behaviours and in doing so achieve commitment from across the organisation including senior management, as well as customers and suppliers. These leadership skills and behaviours are required for the achievement of the objectives and improvements sought by effective procurement and supply chain management. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination.

Corporate and business strategy (PD2)

The purpose of this unit is to enable candidates to critically analyse the development of strategies at business and corporate levels in organisations and to understand how these strategies impact on supply chains. The focus of the unit is on the development and implementation of strategy to enable supply chain personnel to achieve completive advantage through the supply chain. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination.

Strategic supply chain management (PD3)

This unit is intended to enable candidates to be in a position to critically appraise the various strategies that can be adopted in the management of supply chains. The focus is on the configuration and implementation of strategy and how it can be used to achieve competitive advantage through supply chain management. This is achieved by the study of supply chain strategy examples of supply chain strategies in different sectors. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination. Assessment is by means of a previously published case study with the examination based on the case study and the application of the questions to the case study.

Optional Units (Candidates choose two)

Supply chain diligence (PD4)

On completion of this unit candidates should be able to understand the impact of globalisation on supply chains. They should also have an appreciation of the financial aspects that impact on supply chains such as project finance, mergers and acquisitions, financial measures of performance, corporate governance and legal issues, for example, competition issues and employment law. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination.

Programme and project management (PD5)

Upon completion of this unit candidates should understand the main aspects of major programmes and projects and the main contracting issues around major programmes and projects including the financial and investment appraisal. They should also appreciate the techniques for the planning and control of programmes and projects. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination.

Legal aspects in procurement and supply (PD6)

The purpose of this unit is to ensure that candidates will be able to understand the legal issues surrounding contracts and relationships developed in their supply chains. In order to achieve this, candidates will be required to gain an understanding of the legal aspects of contracts, competition, and employment law that impact upon procurement and supply. Also, to interpret implied and express contract terms, understand the main regulations that impact on procurement and supply, and the legal implications of contractual non performance. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination.
