CIPS Advanced Diploma in Procurement and Supply

CIPS Advanced Diploma in procurement and supply provides senior buyers, contract and supply chain managers with the expertise to improve organisational procurement and to fulfil organisational objectives. It supplies the knowledge base to reduce costs, improve quality and timescales, manage the supply chain and deal with legal issues. Also, it enables candidates to gain a wider appreciation of theories and practice that relate to managing people involved in the procurement and supply function. The Advanced Diploma is a valuable qualification in its own right but possession of the Advanced Diploma is an important step in the learner’s progress to the award of MCIPS.

Candidates need to successfully complete five units, three compulsory units and two optional units. The topics covered on the course are:

Compulsory Units

Management in procurement and supply (AD1)

As a manager or senior buyer the ability to manage people is an essential skill and this unit will provide the necessary skills and theoretical understanding of the different approaches to the management of individuals, groups and teams within organisations. These are the essentials skills and techniques required to manage people in the procurement and supply function in the achievement of functional goals. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination.

Managing risks in supply chains (AD2)

The management of supply chain risk is essential in the modern global business environment. This unit is designed to enable candidates to undertake risk analysis and apply a range of appropriate tools and techniques to the management of risk in supply chains. These tools and techniques will enable the candidate to establish the level of risk in supply chains and recommend ways of avoiding, mitigating or managing those risks. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination.

Improving the competitiveness of supply chains (AD3)

This unit is designed to assist candidates in the understanding of a range of techniques to improve the competitiveness of organisations in supply chains. Upon completion of the unit candidates will be able to assess a range of processes that assist in the improvement of business performances throughout the organisation’s supply chain. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination. Assessment is by means of a previously published case study with the examination based on the case study and the application of the questions to the case study.

Category management in procurement and supply (AD4)

Category management has emerged as an essential methodology in modern supply chain management. This unit focuses on the different approaches and methodologies involved in strategic sourcing and category management. Candidates will be able to develop plans to improve performance by the application of systematic approaches to the management of both direct and indirect expenditure and the application of category management to organisational spend. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination

Sustainability in supply chains (AD5)

This unit looks at the concept of sustainability and the relevant initiatives within sustainability such as corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the impact on communities and society, environmental aspects of sourcing, ethical trading and working standards. It considers how sustainable goals within supply chains may be achieved within a global supply chain environment and conformance with required standards. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination

Operations management in supply chains (AD6)

Operations management is the process of converting resources into the outputs of products or services across a wide range of sectors. On completion of the unit candidates will be able to explain plans, designs processes and systems for the improvement of operations. It will enable those involved in procurement and supply to appreciate the techniques that improve operational performance and the factors that influence it. The course is examined and consists of four learning outcomes with one question on each learning outcome in a three hour examination
